ABOUT US

Tumaini DC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides quality Social Emotional and Global Learning programming for students beyond the traditional classroom setting and interactive SEL-focused professional development opportunities for teachers to increase school climate & culture. Our flagship Social Emotional Learning curriculum blends mindfulness, restorative practices, project-based learning, and civic engagement.

The mission of Tumaini DC, Inc. is to cultivate the next generation of socially responsible and globally competent youth of color through transformative social-emotional learning and study abroad experiences.

Students lack access to transformational social emotional & global learning opportunities that provide the skills needed to excel academically & socially. Schools often struggle to build sustainable climate & culture,  lacking structured SEL programming and professional development that can transfer to classroom and out of school time settings.

WHAT IS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING? WHY DO WE CARE?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

We believe in a “whole-child” approach to education beyond the walls of the classroom. Success in college and careers is not built on strong academics alone, and Tumaini DC has developed a curriculum to ensure that children establish communication skills, collaborate well with their peers, and have mentors who inspire them. SEL programs in Out of School Time settings can help develop the foundational competencies and enhances students' ability to succeed in school, careers, and life. We are committed to positive youth development which will build strengths such as character, citizenship, positive cultural identity, supportive relationships and equitable learning opportunities through active and experiential learning.

"Tumaini DC gave me a second chance at life when I wanted to give up. This organization taught me how to make better decisions, control my attitude, build better relationships, and get involved in my community. Years later, I am still connected to my Tumaini Mentor, who has helped me define and pursue my personal and professional goals.”
